Collective Representation: a smile and chat policy

photography by Timothy James Pratt

Summary

An examination of gesture, social structures and corporate policy. The second piece in a trilogy of performances, commisioned work that builds upon the observations of Interaction Order.

Through exploring into gestures within everyday ‘pedestrian’ behaviour and repetitive actions that are observed, there is a close examination on the sociological, ideological and class structures.

The smile and chat policy is a contemporary corporate policy devised by a large supermarket chain, that instructs particular behavioural rules on its employees, simple everyday gestures such as greeting one another, smiling and chatting are codified to enhance our consumer experience.
